Job Description
Science Academic Coach

Are you looking for a school-based role where you can boost GCSE Science outcomes through focused intervention, not vague classroom “support”?

*** Science Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027 (academic year)
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Selly Oak
*** 1:1 and small group academic support for exam preparation in KS4 Science

If you want experience that backs up an application for a PGCE, this Science Academic Coach role gives you a clear purpose in KS4. You will work with GCSE pupils who need targeted support in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, helping them close knowledge gaps, improve exam technique, and build confidence with required practical content and maths in Science.

The Role
  • You will deliver structured 1:1 and small group sessions focused on GCSE Science exam preparation.
  • You will reteach key content where pupils have gaps, using clear explanations and targeted practice.
  • You will support pupils with command words and exam technique, so they answer what the question is actually asking.
  • You will help pupils improve extended responses by modelling clear structures and precise scientific vocabulary.
  • You will build confidence with required practical questions, including methods, variables, accuracy, risk and evaluation.
  • You will strengthen maths in Science, including units, standard form, graphs, and using equations correctly.
  • You will use short retrieval tasks and hinge questions to spot misconceptions quickly and fix them early.
  • You will track common errors and progress, then feedback clearly to Science teachers so interventions stay aligned to lessons.
  • You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.

The Candidate
  • You will have a 2:2 degree or above, ideally in a Science-related subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Science, Forensics, Engineering, or similar).
  • You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
  • You will explain scientific ideas clearly and keep your sessions calm, structured and consistent.
  • You will be confident working with teenagers, and you will maintain professional boundaries.
  • You will be organised and reliable, and you will deliver interventions consistently across the year.
  • You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.

The School
This ‘Good’ secondary school in the Ward of Selly Oak has clear routines and high expectations, with a strong focus on progress in KS4. The Science department uses targeted intervention to support pupils who need extra input, and you will receive clear guidance on what to deliver and how to measure impact. You will join a supportive team that values consistency, purposeful support, and practical strategies that improve GCSE performance.

Apply today with your CV to be considered for this Science Academic Coach role. If you are shortlisted, we will contact you within 3 working days to discuss the school and next steps.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
