Job Description
Science Academic Coach

Want paid classroom experience before teacher training? Help KS3 and KS4 pupils master core science and exam technique.

*** Science Academic Coach
*** £82 - £101 per day
*** January 2026 – July 2026
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston
*** 1:1 and small group academic support across the KS3 & KS4 curriculum

The Role:
You will deliver targeted 1:1 and small group support that links directly to the department scheme. You will pre-teach key concepts, model concise explanations, and guide practice so pupils apply ideas accurately. You will run short clinics on required practical’s, data handling, graphing, units and significant figures, plus command words for 4–6-mark questions. You will diagnose gaps in biology (cells, organisation, ecology), chemistry (bonding, quantitative, rates) and physics (energy, forces, electricity), then address them with step-by-step routines, retrieval and past-paper items. You will prepare lean resources that mirror classroom methods, keep brief impact notes after each session, and agree next steps with class teachers so gains feed straight back into lessons and assessments. You will support calm starts; equipment checks and safe lab routines.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are clear, methodical and organised. You break ideas into small steps, spot misconceptions early and keep sessions purposeful.

• Degree, 2:2 or above in a Science discipline (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or closely related).
• Communication, precise written and spoken English.
• Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
• Desire to work in education/with young people, intent to progress into science teaching.
• Experience with pupils, such as tutoring or mentoring, is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Edgbaston secondary runs simple, consistent routines so lessons stay calm and focused. Science is sequenced in small, connected steps with shared models for explanations, calculations and practical write-ups. Low-stakes checks identify gaps early and drive short interventions. The team co-plans and provides model answers, required-practical packs, diagnostic quizzes and past-paper item banks, which keeps preparation efficient and impact visible. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly CPD and short coaching drop-ins with clear, usable targets, giving you the conditions to show progress quickly and build evidence for ITT.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
